Taking One for the Road: An 1878 Bottle Dump Between Grasshopper Jim’s Scooptown and Camp Sturgis
Katherine Lamie from the South Dakota State Historical Society’s Archaeological Research Center in Rapid City will be presenting on her work to confirm that a bottle dump discovered on private land near Bear Butte is actually associated with the 1878 summer occupation of Camp Sturgis. After discussing details about the results of the bottle analysis, possible site interpretations are proposed that incorporate scholarly discussion of drunken cavalry soldier behavior based on historic references and cutting-edge GIS spatial analysis.
